Anker is a brand of powerbanks and charging cables by the Chinese tech company Ocean wing e-commerce Co. Ltd. based in Shenzhen and founded in 2011 by Steven Yang (阳萌) after working as senior engineer for Google. In contrast to many Chinese brands Anker has adopted direct selling to the western market via regional webshops and Amazon Marketplace.
Anker maintains subsidiaries in California, Germany, UK, Japan and China as well as contractors in Republic of Korea, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia.
In 2014, an Indiegogo campaign to promote a set of magnetic accessories called Zolo was launched. Due to prolonged manufacturing challenges the project was set on hold and 1863 backers were offered a 200% refund.
In 2015, Anker was mentioned as the leading brand of mobile chargers on Amazon.com.
In 2016, Anker USB-C charging cables suffered a manufacturing defect that could potentially cause damage to connected hardware, leading to a recall.
