In Jewish texts, the androgynos (אנדרוגינוס) is intersex or someone displaying both male and female characteristics. The androgynos is one of the six sexes in the Talmud, Mishnah and other rabbinic texts. It appears to be clearly distinct from tumtum, where the sex is hidden by skin, as well as saris, which was a Middle-Eastern class of castrated pagan priests or temple prostitutes whose title is often translated as "eunuch" in modern translations of the Bible.
