An tUltach ([an̪ˠ t̪ˠʊl̪ˠt̪ˠax], meaning "the Ulster-person") is the official magazine of Comhaltas Uladh, the Ulster branch of Conradh na Gaeilge (the Gaelic League).

History and profile

Established in 1924, it is the second-oldest Irish language magazine still in circulation and has subscribers in every county in Ireland and as far away as China.

An tUltach promotes any type of creative writing in Irish and has had such celebrated contributors as Seosamh Mac Grianna, Muiris Ó Droighneáin and Cathal Ó Searcaigh. Its first editor was the founder of Comhaltas Uladh, Fr. Lorcán Ó Muireadhaigh, and its current editor is Ciarán Ó Pronntaigh. The current manager is Seán Ó Murchadha.

An tUltach is funded by the Arts Council for Northern Ireland. It also received funding from Foras na Gaeilge, but at the end of June 2013 Foras na Gaeilge stated that such funding, received via a block grant to Comhaltas Uladh, was to end with immediate effect.
