The Almatari family(Arabic: عائلة المطري), is well known in Jordan for its contribution to the sport of track and field in the country. The father Farouq Almatari, born in Amman, Jordan in 1944, spent more than 30 years of his life coaching short distance runners and is considered one of the pioneers in encouraging women in Jordan to take part in all events of track and field. He was a short distance runner himself (100m, 200m) and later started coaching his six children at Alqadyseyya club, alshabab club and later al-Istiqlal. He also coached the short distance runners in the Jordanian National Team of Track and Field. His runners achieved remarkable results nationally and regionally.
Nimat Almatari, born in Amman, Jordan in 1966, is the oldest daughter. She was a short distance runner 100m and 200m. She inherited her father's speed. She took part in many national track meets and regional ones. She was among the Jordanian track team who took part in the Arab track and field championship in Tunisia. Currently, she is a journalist working for Radio and television of Monte Carlo, France where she resides now. She covers a wide range of topics of interest. She is a strong supporter of women rights. Khadejeh Almatari, born in Amman, Jordan in 1968, left her prints in the sports of track and field in Jordan. Her record in 1500m in Kuwait city still stands since 1983. She has been selected as one of the best female athletes in Jordan. She took part in the first track and field championship in Helsinki, Finland and the first world indoor championship in Paris, France. She was a great cross country runner and won several medals in many competitions. She is married to the Algerian track and field athlete Nour Aldeen Tadjeen who currently coaches the Qatari athletics national team. Currently, Khadejeh works in Qatar for ASPIRE sports Academy for developing young athletes. She holds amaster's degree in Social Anthropology. Alia Almatari Raviola, born in Amman, Jordan in 1971, a former Jordanian Diplomat and athlete. She was a middle distance runner 800m, 1500m and still holds the Jordanian record in 800m ( Cairo) since 1995. She represented Jordan in many international athletic competitions and won several gold, silver and bronze medals. She also was a member in the Jordanian relay teams 4*100 and 4*400 that broke the Jordanian records and won two silver medals in Arab championships (1991-1992-1993) pan Arab games (1993). She participated in the world championship in Stuttgart, Germany (1993) in 800m. She was selected as the second best female athlete in Jordan after her Royal Highness princess Haya Bint Al-Hussein 1992-1996. She was awarded by the late King Hussein of Jordan, Prince Hassan and Princess Haya bint Alhuseein. In 1996 she joined the Jordanian Foreign Service for seven years; she served as a political and consular officer at the Jordanian Embassies in Tunis, Tunisia and Rome, Italy. While in Italy, she was Jordan's alternative representative to the UN organizations, FAO, and WFP. She holds a master's degree in Political Science and Higher Diploma in Diplomacy and Foreign Service from the Jordanian Institute of Diplomacy. She graduated from AHUWC boarding school in New Mexico, USA. Currently, she is married to a Foreign Service officer and is actively involved in supporting women's and children's causes in third world countries. Amal Almatari, born in Amman in 1977, was a very talented long distance runner and still holds 5 Jordanian records in 3000m, 5000m, and half marathon. She won several gold and silver medals for Jordan. The highlights of her achievements were winning a medal for Jordan in the pan Arab games in Lebanon in half marathon. She took part in the youth world championship in Portugal, the Islamic track and field championship in Iran and Asian track and field competition in Japan. She has been selected as one of the best female Jordanian athletes in Jordan and awarded by Prince Hassan and Princess Haya bint Alhuseein al. She is married to a former soccer player. Mohammad Almatari, born in Amman in 1973, was a former medal distance runner 800m and 1500m. He took part in many national and regional track and field competitions. He won many medals with his club Al-Istiqlal and later with the national team. He became a coach with the Jordanian Athletic Federation and has been coaching the team of the municipality of Amman. His young athletes and adults have made remarkable results. He is a computer analyst working for the Municipality of Amman. Ahmad Almatari, born in Amman, Jordan in 1980, is the youngest of the Almataris. He was a middle and long distance runner and achieved great results with his club Al-Istiqlal and the national team. Since he was young, Ahmad was always into coaching, he learned a lot from his Iraqi coach, Arminak Sureen, who also coached his sisters, Khadejeh, Alia and Amal. He attended many seminars and training courses organized by the international amateur athletic federation. Ahmad chose long distance running and marathon to be his specialty. One of his runners won the Stockholm marathon in 2012, came third in the Arab half marathon championship and fifty-sixth in London Olympic marathon. He holds a university degree in computer programming.
