Aleksandr (Oleksandr) Konnov is an associate professor in the Ethics and Aesthetics Department at National Pedagogical Dragomanov University (Kyiv, Ukraine).

Konnov born in Yaroslavl (Russia), graduated from high school in Kremenchuk (Ukraine).

He received high education in Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv (Faculty of Philosophy, 1992–1997).

Konnov received his PhD in Aesthetics in 2010 from the Ethics, Aesthetics and Cultural Studies Department (Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv). The theses contain such core ideas. When we analyse artistic style it's reasonable to use concepts, that describe the material and content of art work as H. Wölfflin's "principles of art history" characterize the form. The theses introduce the following principles, which characterize a content of art work: immanence, transcendence, symbolism, simulative.

Using these concepts, Konnov considers the transformation of artistic style from the Middle Ages to Postmodern. The subject of discussion is historical typology of the artistic process. Empirical researches of art history show, that style dynamics is not according to well known scheme: Renaissance, Baroque, Classicism, Romanticism, Realism, Symbolism (Modernism), Postmodern. This model (with various additions and updates) is reproduced in numerous conceptions of art history. But the facts of artistic practice are not correspond to this one*. As solution to the problem in the thesis it proposes to interpret the "styles" of the Renaissance and Modern period as the moduses of one total style, called "immanent style". Art practice of Modernism and Postmodern is also covered by one "simulative style".

Konnov has worked in the State Academy of Municipal engineering (2004–2011) and National University of “Kyiv-Mohyla Academy” (2010–2013) in Kyiv. Since 2011 Konnov works at National Pedagogical Dragomanov University (Kyiv), teaching courses “Aesthetics” and “Philosophy of Culture”.

Philosophy of Culture course description

This course is devoted to the conditions of the possibility of culture, fundamentals of culture, which are described by such concepts as „symbol”, „value”, „simulacrum” etc. It analyses the principles of interaction between the different cultures, trends of civilization development in the 21st century.

Pedagogical Ethics Laboratory

Konnov is coordinator of Pedagogical Ethics Laboratory (a division of National Pedagogical Dragomanov University (Kiev, Ukraine). Pedagogical Ethics Lab works with such kind of stuff:

  • The motivation of teachers with low salaries and low prestige of the profession (this is relevant for Ukraine now).
  • The resolving conflicts between teachers and students. In the past the weaker part in a conflict situation were students, but today teachers often are more vulnerable. How can one find satisfactory rules for such circumstances?
  • Ethical codes for teachers and students. Do these codes are able to solve problems of motivation and conflicts?
  • "Modeling" as an approach of teaching. The training when students learn by imitation of teacher. How this technique can help with above problems.
