In 1984, Webster was elected to the Australian House of Representatives for the seat of Macquarie as a member of the Liberal Party. He held the seat until his defeat in 1993. He subsequently joined the Call to Australia Party and contested the Senate for them in 1996. He was a delegate to the 1998 Australian Constitutional Convention, which met to discuss the issue of an Australian republic.
