During the war, Shirreff flew the North American Mustang fighter plane in combat with No. 19 Squadron of the Royal Air Force.

After the war Shirreff returned to first-class cricket, playing his first match for the Combined Services against Oxford University. He played for the Combined Services in 40 first-class matches between 1946 and 1957, while maintaining his career in the Royal Air Force.
