Asdrubal Cabrera signs with Rangers
Alfredo A. Cabrera (born May 11, 1881 in the Canary Islands, Spain - 1964) was a major league shortstop. His nickname was Pajaro, which is Spanish for "Bird."
He played his one and only major league game on May 16, 1913. He went a disappointing 0–2 at the plate in that game. However, he did make history as he became the first Spanish-born and also the first and even to this day only African-born major leaguer.
Cabrera played in the Cuban League from 1901 to 1920 and was elected to the Cuban Baseball Hall of Fame in 1942. He also managed in the Cuban League and won a championship in the winter of 1915/16 as manager of the Almendares team.
