Ahmad Al-Qabbanji

Sayyed Ahmad Al-Qabbanji (born 1958) is a liberal Muslim Iraqi writer and Shia cleric. He studied in Hawza religious schools in the Shia holy cities of Najaf and Qom, and is the secretary general of the Liberal Islam Movement in Iraq. His brother is Sadr Al-Din Al-Qabbanji, who is the Friday prayer imam of Najaf and a leader of the Islamic Supreme Council of Iraq.

Controversially, among other positions, he does not believe that the Quran is the direct word of God: rather that “the Koran was created by the Prophet Muhammad, but was driven by Allah.”
