In physics, the generalized coordinates for a Hamiltonian system with associated Hamiltonian function H , consisting of space coordinates q i ( t ) and momenta p i ( t ) , are called action angle coordinates if the Hamiltonian function depends only on the momenta p i , and not on the position q i . In action angle coordinates, Hamilton's equations take on the form:
