The Student Chapters of the American Library Association serve as a community of emerging professionals who are new to the larger association of the American Library Association. While registering as a Student Member through ALA does not automatically grant a student membership to a local student chapter at their university, it is typically not difficult to align oneself with a chapter. Also, there are usually no additional dues.

This burgeoning student organization has recently been revived in the Fall of 2010 after a brief hiatus from previous student leadership. Currently, the UMD ALA Student Chapter consists of six student executive board members and two faculty advisors. While the organization is still in its beginning stages, the attendance and support at introductory meetings have proved promising. The amount of traffic on their Facebook page is also steadily increasing. The chapter intends to provide outlets for fellow iSchool students to socialize and network with one another, while still informing the student body of professional opportunities within ALA.
