A member of Manchester Cricket Club, Hutton's only appearance in first-class cricket came for Lancashire in 1851 against Yorkshire at Manchester. Batting as a tailender, Hutton scored 8 runs in Lancashire's first-innings before he was dismissed by Henry Wright, while in their second-innings he was unbeaten on 5 runs, with Yorkshire winning the match by 5 wickets.
