In postWorld War II Poland, American soldier Norman (Scott Wilson) serves as a driver for a United Nations war-crimes commission examining Nazi mass graves. Norman falls in love with war widow Emilia (Maja Komorowska) and, in spite of language and cultural differences, a meaningful romance blossoms between them. But Emilias loyalty to her ailing mother (Hanna Skarzanka) threatens to separate the couple when Norman finally receives his papers to return home.

A Year of the Quiet Sun (Polish: ) is a 1984 Polish film written and directed by Krzysztof Zanussi. It tells the story of a romance between a Polish refugee and an American soldier.
The film was nominated for 1986s Golden Globe Award for Best Foreign Language Film. At the Venice Film Festival, the film was awarded the Golden Lion and Pasinetti Awards.
Shortly after WWII an American soldier (Norman) and a Polish refugee (Emilia) fall in deep love. Eventually he will return to USA and both expect that she will soon follow him. Emilia's mother is sick but would recover by available medicine. Somehow the mother but not Emilia knows that there will only be one ticket. Realising that Emilia would never abandon her, the mother secretly throws away the daily doses given her by Emilia - and dies
