5th Column is an American heavy metal band from Poughkeepsie, New York formed in April 2003. They took the name 5th Column after a military manoeuvre by Francisco Franco during the Spanish Civil War, in which nationalist insurrectionists within besieged Republican Madrid, called 'the fifth column', would aid the four columns (north, south, east and west) outside the perimeters. A fifth column refers to any clandestine group or faction of subversive agents who attempt to undermine a nation's solidarity.

History

Their first recording The Sunken Drummer Demo was released on August 1, 2004. A song from this demo, "Scott is a Mexican" was based on true events concerning the occupation of member Scott Albrecht. Other tracks recorded for this demo included Sociopath, Skinner, and The Arab Freestyle. The Arab Freestyle was a break from the band's typical slut metal style, featuring Brian Robinson rapping about growing up in Saudi Arabia over the theme from The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.

Their second recording, the full length Cries Of Terror was released on December 29, 2004 and featured the four original tracks from "The Sunken Drummer Demo" as well as many other newer tracks.

Additional releases by 5th Column include the Road Rage Demo released July 21, 2005 and the Black Mirrors Demo released August 23, 2006.

The Road Rage Demo featured two new slut metal tracks "Jam" and "New 5" as well as another freestyle rap track entitled "Stop 'N' Shop" focusing on characters and events from the band members' shared work place Stop & Shop Supermarket.

Their live shows often included various costumed characters such as The Sheik, Richard Peins, and The Mexican Groundskeeper.

Independent-minded, they released their recordings, including their first full length recording Cries Of Terror, themselves on their own label, Dude Enterprises.

In 2005 several 5th Column recordings were featured on the soundtrack for Karate Chop Productions independent film SYK.
