2021 Southeast Asian Games

The 2021 Southeast Asian Games is scheduled to take place from late November to December in 2021 and will feature some 30-36 sports, mainly those played at the Olympics Games. Initially, Ho Chi Minh City was considered to host the Games, however the plan shelved on the grounds of construction cost. Hanoi is the only locality in Vietnam that has proper facilities such as well-built stadiums, sports complexes, and others for shooting, swimming, and the like. Focused in Hanoi, some events are also expected to spread into surrounding areas such as Bac Ninh, Hai Duong, Hai Phong, Ha Nam, Nam Dinh and Hoa Binh.

Development and preparation

Vietnam has plans to spend US$78 million on the upgrading of Hanoi’s sporting facilities and the organisation of the Games. Scheduled to be held from late November and into December, $8.1 million of the budget is expected to be earned back from television rights, food and accommodation paid by national delegations, and sponsorship.
