The 2016–17 FIA Formula E season is the third and current season of the FIA Formula E championship beginning on 9 October 2016 in Hong Kong. Sebastien Buemi is the defending drivers' champion and Renault e.dams is the defending teams' champion.

Dragon Racing manufactured its own drivetrain after using the Venturi drivetrain in the 2015–16 season.
Car manufacturer Jaguar entered the sport, in collaboration with Williams Advanced Engineering, as a means of expanding their electric vehicle portfolio.
The Trulli Formula E Team withdrew from the sport due to technical and financial issues.
Team Aguri withdrew from the sport following a takeover by CMC, who renamed the team Techeetah. They are using customer powertrain from Renault for season three.
MS Amlin Andretti entered a technical partnership with BMW.
2015 European Formula 3 champion Felix Rosenqvist joined the series with Mahindra.
FIA GT World Cup driver Maro Engel joined the series with Venturi.
Three time WTCC champion José María López joined the series with DS Virgin Racing.
Ma Qing Hua, who partook in the final three rounds of the 2015-16 season, races full-time with Techeetah.
2008–09 A1 GP champion Adam Carroll and 2012 GP3 champion Mitch Evans joined Panasonic Jaguar Racing for its first season in the sport.
António Félix da Costa switched from Team Aguri to MS Amlin Andretti.
Jean-Éric Vergne switched from DS Virgin Racing to Techeetah.
After two seasons with Mahindra, Bruno Senna left the series to drive in the FIA World Endurance Championship.
MS Amlin Andretti driver Simona de Silvestro left the series and signed to drive in the Australian Supercars Championship series for 2017.
Mike Conway, who split time between Venturi and Toyota Gazoo Racing in the World Endurance Championship in 2015-16, chose to focus strictly on the latter and elected not to return to Formula E.
After losing his seat with the Haas F1 team, Esteban Gutiérrez is scheduled to join the series at the Mexico City ePrix and various other rounds, with his team yet to be confirmed.
FIA confirmed the season 3 calendar in July 2016. The series will expand to twelve rounds at ten venues. The United States round moves from Long Beach to New York City. New rounds in Hong Kong (Hong Kong), Morocco (Marrakech), Belgium (Brussels) and Canada (Montreal) are added while Russia (Moscow) and Uruguay (Punta del Este) were dropped. The Monaco ePrix will return to the calendar after a one-year absence. London is looking for a new venue after Battersea Park lost the rights to host the ePrix.
The fastest lap is only awarded 1 point (in the first two seasons it was worth 2 points).
The permitted rate of regeneration has been increased to 150 kW (previously 100 kW).
Maximum power output remains limited at 200 kW for season three, but will later be increased to 220 kW in season four and 250 kW in season five.
The overall weight of the car has been reduced from 888 kg to 880 kg.
The maximum weight of the battery cells has been increased from 200 kg in season two to 230 kg for season three.
Michelin provides a new tyre.
The front wing has been redesigned, but only with "cosmetic effects".
