The 2016–17 Sheffield Shield season is the 124th season of the Sheffield Shield, the domestic first-class cricket competition in Australia. It started on 25 October 2016 and is scheduled to finish on 29 March 2017. There was a break between December and January for the Big Bash League. The first round of matches were played as day/night games in preparation for Australia's day/night Test match against Pakistan on 15 December 2016. A second day/night round of fixtures took place in round five of the tournament.
