Flavia Pennetta was the defending champion, but lost in the quarterfinals to Sabine Lisicki.

This tournament also marked Serena Williams' return to Indian Wells for the first time since 2001 where she ended up winning against Kim Clijsters in the final, which garnered a lot of controversy because she received a walkover in the semifinals where she was due to player her sister, Venus Williams.

Simona Halep won the title, defeating Jelena Janković in the final 2–6, 7–5, 6–4.
