Serena Williams was the two-time defending champion, but lost to 2007 finalist and future champion Marion Bartoli in the fourth round.

For the first time since 1913, all eight quarterfinalists were European.

Czech Petra Kvitová won the championship for the first time. It was her first Grand Slam final and title of her career. She defeated 2004 champion Maria Sharapova, 6–3, 6–4. Kvitová became the first female left-handed player to win Wimbledon since Martina Navratilova in 1990.
