Rafael Nadal was the defending champion and retained his title, defeating Roger Federer in the final 6–1, 6–3, 6–0. This was Federer's worst loss in a Grand Slam event in his entire career. Nadal won the title without losing a single set, becoming the third man in the Open era after Ilie Năstase and Björn Borg to win the French Open without dropping a set for the entire tournament.

This was the final Grand Slam appearance of former World No. 1 and three-time champion Gustavo Kuerten. He lost to Paul-Henri Mathieu in the first round, and retired from professional tennis shortly after.
