Amélie Mauresmo was the defending champion but was knocked out in the fourth round by Nicole Vaidišová.

23rd seed Venus Williams defeated Marion Bartoli in the final, 6–4, 6–1. Williams, ranked 31st at the time, remains the lowest ranked and seeded player ever to win Wimbledon. Bartoli would eventually win the Wimbledon title six years later.
