Venus Williams was the defending champion, but she lost in the third round against Jelena Janković.

Amélie Mauresmo won her first (and only) Wimbledon title, defeating Justine Henin-Hardenne in the final, 2–6, 6–3, 6–4. It was her second and last Grand Slam title, having won the Australian Open earlier in the year; on that occasion, Henin-Hardenne retired due to a stomach bug. It was the first Wimbledon final since 1999 not to feature either of the Williams sisters.
