Serena Williams successfully defended her title, beating her older sister Venus Williams in the final for the second year in a row, 4–6, 6–4, 6–2.
This was the first Wimbledon appearance of future World No. 1 Maria Sharapova played in the main draw. She would go on to win the title in the following year.
