The women's singles competition at the 2003 US Open started on Monday, August 25, 2003 in New York City. Justine Henin-Hardenne was the Champion defeating compatriot Kim Clijsters in the final, 7-5, 6-1. Henin-Hardenne dropped only one set in the whole tournament and that was to American Jennifer Capriati in the semi-finals. Serena Williams was the defending champion, but withdrew due to injury. Future champion Flavia Pennetta entered her first US Open appearance in the main draw.
