Serena Williams was the defending champion, but she was defeated in the semifinals by Justine Henin-Hardenne, thus restricting her winning streak of Grand Slams to four.

Henin-Hardenne then defeated 2001 finalist compatriot, and rival Kim Clijsters in the final to win her first Grand Slam title.

Notably this was the final Grand Slam appearance of former World No. 1 and 9-time Grand Slam champion Monica Seles would ever play, she was upset and defeated by Nadia Petrova in the first round. This was Seles' only first round loss in her Grand Slam career.
