Venus Williams was the defending champion, but she was defeated by her sister Serena in the final, 6–4, 6–3. This was Serena's third consecutive Grand Slam title, and second consecutive without losing a set. This was also her first Grand Slam tournament competed as World No. 1.

Four-time Grand Slam champion and former World No. 1 Arantxa Sánchez Vicario made in her final Grand Slam appearance before losing to French qualifier Marion Bartoli in the first round.
