Under the Whyte notation for the classification of steam locomotives, a 2-6-6-2+2-6-6-2 is a locomotive with two leading wheels two sets of six driving wheels and two trailing wheels vice versa on the opposing end. Such a locomotive had to be an articulated super garratt type locomotive because of its length. South African Railways (SAR) proposed to make this and drew a blueprint for it. But as the triplex design before it failed with three sets of drivers this would be even worse as it had four. It would have taken the worse thing about one locomotive and increased the power of the problem. So unsurprisingly this locomotive never passed the blueprint stage of its life. Other equivalent classifications are:

  • French classification: 1331+1331
  • Turkish classification: 68+68
  • Swiss classification: 3/4+3/4-3/4+3/4 up to the early 1920s, later 12/16
