Martina Hingis was the defending champion, but she was defeated by Lindsay Davenport in the final, 6–3, 7–5, in what was a rematch of last year's semifinal.

The tournament was notable for the final US Open appearance of five-time champion Steffi Graf in the main draw, who lost to Patty Schnyder in the fourth round. It was also the first US Open appearance of six-time champion Serena Williams, where she would go on to win her first title in the following year.
