World No. 1 Martina Hingis won title, defeating Jana Novotná in the final, 2–6, 6–3, 6–3, to become the youngest person since Lottie Dod to win Wimbledon. Anna Kournikova, aged 15, made the semifinals in her Wimbledon debut, the youngest ever woman to reach the semifinals.
