World No. 1 Martina Hingis won the title, defeating unseeded Venus Williams in the final, 6–0, 6–4. By reaching the final, she became the seventh woman, after Maureen Connolly, Margaret Court, Chris Evert, Martina Navratilova, Steffi Graf and Monica Seles, to reach all four Grand Slam finals in a calendar year. She also became the youngest woman to reach all Grand Slam finals, and the youngest woman to win three Grand Slams in a calendar year.
