Skate America is an international, senior-level invitation-only figure skating competition organized by the USFSA. It was the first ISU Champions Series event to be held. The location changes yearly. Medals are awarded in four disciplines: men's singles, ladies' singles, pair skating, and ice dancing.

The 1997 competition was held at the Joe Louis Arena in Detroit, Michigan on October 23–25. The compulsory dance was the Golden Waltz.
