The 1996 New Zealand National Basketball League season was the 15th running of the competition. Only one change occurred heading into the 1996 season, with the Waitakere Rangers dropping down to the Conference Basketball League. The Auckland Stars won the championship in 1996 to claim their fourth league title. Auckland faced the Nelson Giants in the best-of-three grand final series where, despite Nelson winning Game 1 110–95, Auckland prevailed with a 2–1 series win, defeating Nelson 109–98 in Game 2 and 94–90 in Game 3.
