Steffi Graf was the defending champion, but she was defeated by home player Mary Pierce in the semifinals.

Arantxa Sánchez Vicario won the title, defeating Pierce, 6–4, 6–4.

This tournament is notable as the first time that former World No. 1 Martina Navratilova lost in the first round of a Grand Slam tournament since 1976. This tournament is also the last Grand Slam to feature Tracy Austin, another former World No. 1. Although defeated in the final, Mary Pierce got there with the loss of only 10 games.
