Monica Seles was the defending champion, and she successfully defended her title without losing a set, defeating Arantxa Sánchez Vicario in the final, 6–3, 6–3. By reaching the final, Monica became the sixth woman, after Maureen Connolly, Margaret Court, Chris Evert, Martina Navratilova, Steffi Graf, to reach all four Grand Slam finals in a calendar year.
