Steffi Graf was the defending champion but lost in the semi-finals to Zina Garrison-Jackson. This was the first time since 1986 US Open that Graf did not reach the Grand Slam final (she missed the 1987 Australian Open due to travel issues).
Martina Navratilova won in the final, 6–4, 6–1, against Garrison-Jackson. This would be Navratilova's 18th and last Grand Slam singles title.
