Boris Becker was the two-time defending champion, but he lost to Peter Doohan in the second round.

Pat Cash was the champion, defeating Ivan Lendl, 7–6(7–5), 6–2, 7–5.

Andre Agassi made his first appearance in the main draw at Wimbledon. He lost in the first round to Henri LeConte. Agassi would refuse to compete in Wimbledon again until 1991 due to his disagreement with the dress code.
