Martina Navratilova was the defending champion, but she was defeated by her rival Chris Evert-Lloyd in the semifinals.

Evonne Goolagong Cawley won the title, defeating Evert-Lloyd in the final, 6–1, 7–6(7–4). The second set tie-breaker was the first tie-break ever played in the ladies singles final at Wimbledon and the match was the first ever singles (mens or ladies) final to end on a tie-break.
