Margaret Court was the defending Women's Singles champion at the 1970 Australian Open, and by the conclusion of the competition she successfully defended her title, defeating compatriot Kerry Melville in the final 6–3, 6–1. This was her first step towards completing the second Calendar Grand Slam.
