Melbourne Cricket Ground

The 1947 VFL Grand Final was an Australian rules football game contested between the Carlton Football Club and Essendon Football Club, held at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on 27 September 1947. It was the 51st annual Grand Final of the Victorian Football League, staged to determine the premiers for the 1947 VFL season. The match, attended by 85,793 spectators, was won by Carlton by a margin of 1 point, marking that club's eighth premiership victory.

Essendon were attempting to become back-to-back premiers and had the lead in the final minute before Ken Baxter won the ball from a boundary throw in and gave the ball to Carlton half forward flanker Fred Stafford who snapped the winning goal off his left boot with just 40 seconds remaining.

It was the first grand final to be decided by a single point since Fitzroy defeated South Melbourne in the 1899 VFL Grand Final.
