1764 Cogshall, provisional designation 1953 VM1, is a main-belt asteroid discovered on November 7, 1953 by the Indiana Asteroid Program at Goethe Link Observatory in the U.S state of Indiana. The asteroid with a low orbital inclination of 2.2 degrees has an diameter of about 26 kilometers.

Named in honor of Wilbur A. Cogshall, professor of astronomy at Indiana University and director of Kirkwood Observatory. He was known for his work on visual binary stars, photography of solar eclipses, and as a teacher of many who followed professional careers in astronomy.
