Byer is a documentary photojournalist. She won a Pulitzer Prize in 2007 for her "A Mother's Journey" feature photo.[1] "A Mother's Journey" was a series of photos, over the course of a year, about a boy at the age of 11 years who was battling neuroblastoma, a type of cancer.
Byer was a Pulitzer Prize finalist in 2013, "For her heartwarming photographs of a grandfather raising three grandchildren after the violent death of his daughter and the loss of his wife to cancer."[2]
Byer is married to Paul Kitagaki, Jr., the senior photographer at The Sacramento Bee.
